5 favourite interior design styles

Wondering how best to decorate your flat or apartment? Whether you are choosing a style for your home or your rental property, it's always a personal and difficult choice. Here we list our 5 favourite styles to hopefully inspire you in your choice.

1. Scandinavian

The "Scandi" style is one of the most commonly-used interior decorating styles, perhaps not least because of its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Clean, cosy and easy to create, with pastel tones and warm textures, the "Scandi" is very difficult to get wrong. It is functional and tidy, avoiding clusters and heavy tones. Scandi usually features colours like blush pink, baby blue, mint green and soft greys, whilst chunky knitted blankets and throws can add a touch of luxury and warmth.

2. Eclectic

The Eclectic style is the most interesting of the bunch. Scope for creativity is endless; this is your chance to break rules and experiment. You are free to borrow ideas, blend old and new, throw in and mix bold colours, textures and patterns. It's an “anything goes” style where no one can restrict you and no one can guide you but yourself. Of course the obvious danger of going for this style is that it can look very "random" if you don't carefully think about how you will mix and match the different pieces. For the artists amongst us, this will be the most exciting choice.

3. Minimalist

Initially influenced by the simplicity of Japanese design, minimalist decor is based on the principle that less is more. Empty space is often a big part of the space; in fact it is usually the statement of the room. Colour is used sparingly with black and white being the most commonly used so as not to distract from the simplicity.

4. Industrial

Usually synonymous with large, converted warehouses, exposed brick walls and Brooklyn-style apartments. Industrial interior style is all about raw, exposed materials reminiscent of a factory. Statement lights are often a feature and are particularly important for softening an otherwise cold space. Industrial spaces are authentic and natural; with brass, wood and leather often being the key elements. Add rugs and big decorative pieces to tie-in and warm up the space.

5. Contemporary

Contemporary style, as its name suggests, refers to "of the moment". Dating back to the 1970s, contemporary style borrows elements from other styles and merges them into a more modern-day, sleek style. Metals and glass are popular materials and intricate details are kept to a minimum. Clean surfaces, glossy elements, and luxe furniture come together for this style.
